Hard water contains minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, and sometimes trace metals like iron or copper. These minerals prevent soap from dissolving properly, which leaves behind a residue on the skin and hair, as well as directly impacting skin and hair health.
Our consultant dermatologist Dr Sonia explains it like this:
"Hard water can increase skin pH, making it more alkaline. The skin barrier functions best at a slightly acidic pH (~5.5). A higher pH weakens the skin's defence mechanisms. Therefore, prolonged exposure to hard water can result in a compromised skin barrier, making it more susceptible to various skin issues. This can result in a flare up of eczema and psoriasis and even result in heightened skin sensitivity."
The wider research points the same way. The seminal Lancet study of around 7,640 schoolchildren found eczema in 17.3% of those in the hardest-water areas versus 12.0% in the softest (McNally et al., 1998), and a study of 1,303 UK infants found higher odds of visible eczema in hard-water homes (Perkin et al., 2016). A systematic review pooling seven studies (around 385,901 people) reached the same association (Jabbar-Lopez et al., 2021). One mechanism is that hard water increases how much irritant cleanser residue (such as SLS) is left on the skin, an effect that's worse in eczema-prone skin (Danby et al., 2018).
In the interest of honesty: a randomised controlled trial found that fitting a whole-house water softener did not improve eczema that people already had (Thomas et al., 2011). So our products are a cosmetic step to make shower water gentler on the skin barrier, not a medical treatment. If you have eczema, psoriasis or persistent skin concerns, please see your GP or a dermatologist.
They can play a part, but neither is a proven cause of acne on its own.
The likely link is the skin barrier and what's left behind on it. Hard water increases how much irritant cleanser residue stays on the skin after washing, and this is more pronounced in sensitive, eczema-prone skin (Danby et al., 2018). A higher residue load plus a more alkaline, slightly compromised barrier can leave skin feeling tight, rough or reactive, which some people experience as congestion or breakouts. Chlorine can add to that by drying and irritating the skin barrier, with the clearest evidence again coming from high-exposure pool settings rather than tap water (Paciência et al., 2021; Kanikowska et al., 2018).
None of this proves that hard water or chlorine causes acne, and our filters are a gentle cosmetic step rather than an acne treatment. If you have persistent or painful breakouts, please see your GP or a dermatologist.
We frame this carefully, because the evidence is precautionary rather than proven at tap-water levels.
Metals such as copper and lead can penetrate and accumulate in the skin (Franken et al., 2015), and several metals are recognised skin sensitisers and irritants (Chamani et al., 2023) — though that evidence comes mainly from jewellery and occupational contact, not drinking or shower water. Copper has also been shown to worsen UV damage to hair (Marsh et al., 2014, industry-funded). It is not established that metals at ordinary tap-water levels damage skin, so we won't claim that they do.
As a sensible precaution, the KDF (copper-zinc) media in our filters is an established redox technology that helps reduce certain dissolved heavy metals such as lead and mercury. Separately, the media itself is RoHS-tested and verified free from heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium), so it doesn't add any to your water. This is a cosmetic, not a medical, benefit; for any skin condition please see your GP or dermatologist.
The clearest evidence comes from high-exposure settings like swimming pools rather than ordinary tap water, so it's worth being precise.
In pools, chlorine and its by-products are recognised skin, eye and respiratory irritants (Kanikowska et al., 2018), and in atopic (allergy-prone) people pool attendance has been linked to more eczema (Chaumont et al., 2012). In one controlled comparison, swimmers showed a significantly greater rise in transepidermal water loss, a marker of barrier disruption, than footballers (Paciência et al., 2021). That said, reviews of pool water and the skin barrier find the overall evidence mixed (O'Connor et al., 2023), and for everyday tap-water chlorine the independent effect on eczema is uncertain (Perkin et al., 2016).
If your skin reacts to chlorine, reducing your exposure may help. Our shower filters significantly reduce free chlorine at the showerhead, verified in independent SGS testing (reduction is highest with a fresh cartridge and tapers as it nears the end of its life, which is why we recommend replacing it on schedule). This is a cosmetic measure to make shower water gentler, not a treatment for eczema or any condition. For diagnosed skin conditions, please speak to your GP or dermatologist.
You may feel dryness or irritation after showering, or notice a chlorine smell. For exact levels, check your local water quality report using our tool or use an at-home water testing kit.
Signs of hard water include dry, flaky skin, dull or lifeless hair, and mineral deposits on your shower head or faucets. You can check your local water hardness by entering your postcode in our water quality tool.
We make four shower products. They all filter your water as you shower — the right one for you comes down to how you want to install it and the look you're after.
Shower Filter (inline)
- What it is: A compact filter that sits between your existing wall arm and your current shower head or hose.
- Install: Screws on in a couple of minutes with no tools — you keep your existing shower head.
- Best for: Anyone who wants filtered water but loves (or is renting and can't change) their current shower head.
Rain Shower
- What it is: A wide, fixed overhead rainfall shower head with filtration built in.
- Install: Replaces your existing fixed shower head.
- Best for: People who want a generous, rainfall-style flow and filtration in one fitting.
Shower Head 2.0
- What it is: Our standard handheld filtered shower head.
- Install: Replaces your existing handheld head and screws onto the hose — no tools needed.
- Best for: Anyone who wants a straightforward handheld filtered shower head.
Shower Head+
- What it is: Our intelligent handheld filtered shower head. It filters exactly like the 2.0 but adds smart tracking: it monitors your water use and filter life, shows it in the app, alerts you when the filter needs replacing, and tracks your water temperature to warn you when the water is hot enough to stress your skin.
- Install: Same as the 2.0 — replaces your handheld head, no tools needed.
- Best for: People who want filtered water plus data on their usage, filter life and shower temperature.
A quick note on refills: the Shower Filter and Rain Shower share the same Refill Capsule, while Shower Head 2.0 and Shower Head+ share the same refill cartridge. So if you're choosing between products, you're also choosing which refill you'll reorder.
Not sure which suits your bathroom? Message us and we'll help you pick.
Both filter your water in exactly the same way and use the same refill cartridge, so the water you shower in is identical. The difference is the smarts.
Shower Head 2.0 — our standard handheld filtered shower head. Straightforward, no app, no electronics.
Shower Head+ — our intelligent version. On top of the same filtration, it:
- Monitors your water usage and tracks how much filter life you have left
- Shows all of this in the app
- Alerts you when the filter is spent and needs replacing, so you're never guessing
- Tracks your water temperature and warns you when the water is hot enough to stress your skin (very hot water can dry out and irritate skin)
Because they share the same refill cartridge, switching between them later doesn't change which refill you reorder.
In short: choose the 2.0 if you just want clean, filtered water in a simple handheld head; choose the Shower Head+ if you also want to track your usage and filter life and get a heads-up on water temperature.
Each filter is a multi-stage cartridge, and every layer does a specific job:
- Coconut-shell activated carbon — a high-surface-area carbon that reduces free chlorine and the taste and odour that come with it. Activated carbon is one of the most established water-treatment media there is (EPA — Overview of Drinking Water Treatment Technologies; Suidan & Snoeyink, 1975), and field-scale work shows carbon also helps cut chlorination by-products in tap water (Kajjumba et al., 2026).
- Calcium sulphite — a dechlorination agent that reacts with free chlorine and neutralises it into harmless chloride, the same chemistry used in mains-water dechlorination (AWWA dechlorination guidance).
- KDF copper-zinc media — a copper-zinc redox alloy that reduces free chlorine and is an established technology that helps reduce certain dissolved heavy metals such as lead and mercury. (No exact figure is claimed for metals; it works through an electrochemical redox reaction rather than simple adsorption.) A practical strength of KDF is that it keeps working in hot water and at higher flow rates, where carbon alone has less contact time.
- Antiscaling media — helps reduce limescale so the unit and your fittings stay cleaner for longer.
The media itself is independently RoHS-tested free of heavy metals, so the filter reduces what's in your water without adding any metals of its own.
A realistic note on how showers work: shower water is hot and fast-moving, so contact time with the media is short. That's why we pair fast-acting carbon and KDF with calcium sulphite, and why we recommend replacing your cartridge on schedule — an exhausted carbon filter loses performance and can harbour bacteria over time (Li et al., 2026).
1.0 is our older generation. We've since improved both the design and the filtration on the 2.0, but plenty of 1.0 products are still in happy use — so we continue to sell 1.0 refill cartridges and you don't need to replace your whole shower head to keep it running.
The surest way to get the right refill is to contact us with your order number. We'll look up exactly which product you have and make sure you get the correct refill — no guesswork. If you no longer have your order number, just send us your name and the email or address used on the order and we'll find it.
If you're reordering a refill and aren't certain which generation you're on, reach out before you buy and we'll confirm it for you.
Our filters are independently tested by SGS, world-leading provider of independent laboratory testing. On a fresh cartridge, SGS measured over 99% free-chlorine reduction at the standard 2.0 mg/L test concentration. Free-chlorine reduction is highest when the filter is new and eases off gradually as the cartridge is used up — in SGS's service-life run it stayed above 96% through the early part of the cycle. Because typical UK and EU shower water carries far less free chlorine (around 0.2–0.3 mg/L) than the lab challenge, a normal household stays in that high-reduction range across a standard 3-month replacement cycle (see "How often should I replace my filter?").
The filter media is also independently tested to EU RoHS standards and is free from restricted heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium all non-detect), so it does not add these metals to your water.
Our Shower Head 2.0 meets the EN 1112 European safety standard for shower fittings, and our Shower Head+ is tested to RoHS, passes a 200-hour salt-spray corrosion test at the top grade, and is built to WEEE recyclability standards (around 77% recyclable and 90% recoverable).

Not in the way a water softener does, and we want to be honest about that. A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, usually for your whole home. Our filter does not remove those hardness minerals, so your water's hardness number does not change.
What it does is significantly reduce free chlorine right at your shower (over 96% on a fresh cartridge in independent SGS testing, tapering as the cartridge is used up), and chlorine is a major contributor to the dryness, tightness and irritation many people blame on hard water. So the hardness stays the same, but the water can feel noticeably gentler on skin and hair. For limescale on tiles and taps you'd need a softener; for calmer skin and softer-feeling hair in the shower, a filter is the renter-friendly option.
It takes about two minutes by hand, with no tools or a plumber needed. Unscrew your current shower head or hose and screw the Hello Klean unit onto the standard 1/2-inch (G1/2) shower fitting. Step-by-step guides are on our Installation and Fitting guide pages.
Our products use the standard UK and EU 1/2-inch (G1/2) shower fitting, which fits the large majority of showers. The Shower Filter sits in-line, so it works with most existing hoses and heads. If you have a non-standard or older fitting, check our Fitting guide or contact us before ordering and we will help you confirm compatibility.
No. Our Shower Filter, Rain Shower, and Shower Head can be installed by hand in about two minutes, with no tools or plumber needed.
No, our Hello Klean Filtration range won’t affect your water temperature. The filters are designed to maintain your water's flow rate and pressure, ensuring that your water temperature remains consistent during your shower.
Yes, our Hello Klean Filtration range is compatible with electric heaters and can be installed without issue. However, because different heaters have varying flow requirements, we recommend checking with your heater's supplier or manufacturer beforehand to ensure optimal performance. This way, you can be sure everything works smoothly together.
Our shower heads are engineered to keep a strong, satisfying flow, and most customers say the pressure feels great or even better. Filtered media can slightly affect flow on very low-pressure or gravity-fed systems. If that is your setup, contact us and we will recommend the best option.
A small drip at a new connection is almost always the washer. Make sure the rubber washer is seated flat in the connector, hand-tighten firmly without cross-threading, and add a little PTFE (plumber's) tape to the thread if needed. If it still leaks, send us a photo and we will sort it out quickly.
We recommend every 3 months for most households. The honest detail: in independent SGS testing the cartridge was challenged with more free chlorine (around 0.6 mg/L) than typical UK and EU shower water carries (around 0.2–0.3 mg/L). Because a carbon/KDF filter's chlorine capacity is governed mainly by the total amount of chlorine it processes, water that's less concentrated lets one cartridge stay effective over more litres.
For a typical one-person household, three months of normal showering keeps you in the filter's high-reduction range; busier or larger households process more water and chlorine, so reduction tapers sooner — a fresh cartridge at the 3-month mark keeps performance high. There's a second reason to keep to schedule: research on point-of-use carbon filters shows an exhausted filter not only loses performance but can begin to harbour bacteria (Li et al., 2026).
These are usage-based guides from typical UK water and shower habits, not a fixed figure certified by SGS, so if your area is heavily chlorinated or you shower a lot, change it a little sooner.
The 2-piece Refill Cartridges fit the Shower Head and Shower Head+. The Refill Capsule fits the Shower Filter and the Rain Shower. If you are unsure which you have, contact us with your order number and we will point you to the right one.
We have improved our filters over time, so refill fit depends on which generation of device you own. If a refill does not fit your head, do not worry. Send us your order number and we will make sure you get the correct refill that fits, with no hassle.
Refills are £40 and last 3 to 4 months, which works out to roughly £10 to £13 a month, or under 50p a day, for filtered water at every shower. A Smart Refill plan saves versus one-off pricing and reorders automatically, so it is more like replacing a daily skincare product than a one-off gadget.
Yes. Our refillable system uses far less plastic than disposable filtered heads, and our Shower Head+ is designed so around 77% can be recycled and 90% recovered at end of life, meeting EU WEEE environmental standards. See our Sustainability page for more.

In hard-water areas, the issue isn't that your hair gets structurally "weaker" — it's that minerals build up on it. When you wash in hard water, calcium and magnesium deposit onto and into the hair. Under the microscope this shows up as a rougher, more ruffled cuticle and a slightly thinner-looking shaft (Srinivasan & Rangachari, 2016), with magnesium in particular depositing more heavily on hard-water-washed hair (Alahmmed et al., 2017). That buildup is what tends to leave hair feeling dull, rough, harder to manage and quicker to lose colour vibrancy — and it's most pronounced in colour-treated and already-damaged hair, which takes up these minerals more readily (Evans et al., 2011; Godfrey et al., 2013).
Worth being precise here: hard water hasn't been shown to actually weaken the hair fibre. A controlled study found no change to hair's tensile strength or elasticity after hard-water washing (Srinivasan et al., 2013) — so we talk about buildup, feel and manageability rather than "breakage" or a weaker strand.
That's exactly what our hair care is built around. Klean Complex™ — a blend of amino acids and antioxidants — binds the minerals, metals and chlorine in harsh water so they're lifted away with rinsing instead of clinging to the hair and accumulating wash after wash. The aim is to keep hair feeling smoother, softer and more manageable, with colour that holds its vibrancy longer. Pairing the products with a Hello Klean shower filter (which reduces chlorine at the showerhead) addresses both sides of harsh water at once. These are cosmetic products that improve the feel and look of your hair, not a medical treatment for any scalp or skin condition.
The honest answer is: mostly buildup, not damage in the sense of a broken or weakened strand. Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, and washing in it leaves these minerals deposited on and within the hair. Microscope imaging shows hard-water-washed hair with a rougher, ruffled cuticle surface and a slightly reduced shaft thickness compared with hair washed in pure water (Srinivasan & Rangachari, 2016), and a separate study found magnesium deposition significantly higher on hard-water-washed hair even where no obvious structural change was visible (Alahmmed et al., 2017).
What that buildup actually does is change how hair behaves: it tends to feel rougher, duller and harder to manage, and colour can fade faster. It's most pronounced in colour-treated and chemically damaged hair, which absorbs these hardness minerals more readily — colour-treated hair and hair people rate as in poorer condition consistently carries more of them (Evans et al., 2011; Godfrey et al., 2013).
What hard water has not been shown to do is weaken or break the fibre itself: a controlled study measured no change in hair's tensile strength or elasticity after hard-water washing (Srinivasan et al., 2013). So the right way to think about it is mineral residue you want to lift away — not structural damage.
That's the job of Klean Complex™ in our hair care: its amino acids and antioxidants bind the minerals and metals in harsh water so they rinse away rather than accumulating wash after wash, helping hair stay smoother, more manageable and truer in colour. Using it alongside a Hello Klean shower filter tackles both the minerals on the hair and the chlorine in the water. These are cosmetic products for the feel and appearance of your hair, not a medical treatment — for any scalp condition, see your GP or dermatologist.
Chlorine can affect hair, and the clearest evidence comes from high-exposure settings like swimming pools rather than ordinary tap water. In a study of elite swimmers, hair discolouration was far more common than in non-swimmers, and electron microscopy showed cuticle surface damage (Nanko et al., 2000). Green tints — the classic "swimmer's hair" — are usually down to copper in the water rather than chlorine itself: copper from domestic or pool water, helped along by chlorinated water and alkaline shampoo, binds to the hair and is most visible in light or blonde hair (Mascaró et al., 1995).
Tap water sits at much lower chlorine levels than a pool, so we're careful not to overstate things: reducing your chlorine exposure in the shower may help keep hair feeling and looking its best, but a shower filter isn't a cure and won't repair hair that's already been affected.
Here's how Hello Klean helps on both fronts. Our shower filters significantly reduce free chlorine right at the showerhead — verified in independent SGS testing — so there's less chlorine contacting your hair in the first place (reduction is highest with a fresh cartridge and tapers towards the end of its life, which is why we recommend replacing it on schedule). And in our hair care, Klean Complex™ (amino acids plus antioxidants) binds chlorine and metals so they lift away with rinsing instead of clinging to the strand. Together that means less chlorine exposure and less residue left behind. These are cosmetic products for the look and feel of your hair, not a medical treatment.
Klean Complex™ is the active blend at the heart of our hair and body formulas (it is not the filter inside our shower devices). It combines amino acids and antioxidants that work together to neutralise the minerals, chlorine, heavy metals and pollutants in hard, harsh water — the same impurities that can dry out and irritate your skin and leave it feeling tight, rough or prone to flare-ups. By binding to these and stopping them clinging to your hair and skin in the shower, Klean Complex™ helps lift away and prevent buildup so your skin feels calmer and more comfortable and your hair feels softer and easier to manage. It is a cosmetic complex designed to support how your skin and hair look and feel in hard-water conditions; it is not a medicine and is not intended to treat, cure or prevent any skin condition. If you have eczema, psoriasis or another diagnosed condition, we always recommend following your dermatologist's advice.
Results will vary, but with consistent use, the damaging effects of harsh and chlorinated water are gradually reduced. As mineral buildup lifts, hair often feels lighter, softer, and more like how it used to.

Yes. Our formulas are safe for all chemically treated hair, including keratin treatments, Brazilian blowouts, as well as colour-treated hair.
Full Cover Anti-Thinning Shampoo is formulated to target hair density and stimulate new growth, using ingredients like Aminexil and Biotin to strengthen hair from the root and improve scalp health.
Full Length Anti-Breakage Shampoo focuses on protecting existing hair by preventing damage from hard water and reducing breakage. While both formulas neutralise unwanted impurities in hard water, Full Cover works at the scalp level to promote thicker hair, whereas Full Length shields and fortifies hair strands.
Both conditioners offer powerful protection against hard water, helping to smooth strands and maintain moisture. The Light Hair Conditioner contains light violet pigments to neutralise unwanted yellow tones in lighter hair, while the Dark Hair Conditioner helps maintain depth and tone in darker hair by reducing brassiness and dullness.
Hard water and chlorine can leave skin feeling tight, dry and reactive — so our body care is built to work with filtered water, not against it. It's powered by Klean Complex™, a blend of amino acids and antioxidants that neutralises the minerals, chlorine, heavy metals and pollutants in harsh water so they're rinsed away instead of building up on your skin and drying it out.
Why the focus on harsh water? The evidence on water and skin is consistent:
- Living in a hard-water area is associated with higher rates of eczema in children — first established in the landmark Lancet study (McNally et al., 1998) and confirmed in a large systematic review and meta-analysis (Jabbar-Lopez et al., 2021).
- Hard water increases how much irritant cleanser residue (such as SLS) is left on the skin after washing, which can disrupt the skin barrier — and it's worse in eczema-prone skin (Danby et al., 2018).
- For chlorine specifically, the clearest evidence is from high-exposure settings such as swimming pools; the independent effect of everyday tap-water chlorine on skin is still uncertain (Perkin et al., 2016). So the honest framing is that reducing your chlorine and mineral exposure in the shower may help skin feel calmer and more comfortable.
A note on expectations: our body care is cosmetic, not a medical treatment. It's designed to soften, soothe and support skin made uncomfortable by harsh water — it does not treat, cure or prevent eczema, psoriasis or any skin condition. If you have a persistent or diagnosed skin concern, please see your GP or dermatologist.
Harsh water can make skin feel tight, dry, and more prone to flare ups, especially for those with eczema or psoriasis. According to GP Dr Sonia Khorana, exposure to hard water has even been linked to a higher risk of developing eczema.
While our body care isn’t a treatment, it’s designed to support compromised skin. Each formula contains Klean Complex™ to neutralise irritating minerals, remove buildup, and help strengthen your skin barrier. For personalised advice, we always recommend speaking to your dermatologist.
